After studying regular verbs in present for some weeks, this week we have a post about some irregular verbs, classified in four main groups. Those groups helps students to remember the changes in the verb root. Now we present the groups and their characteristics.
E > IE
In this group we change the vowel e into ie when we conjugate the verb. For instance, for the verb CERRAR (to close), we need to change the vowels as follows, except for the first person plural (nosotros).
Yo cierro los ojos cuando estoy cansada
Tú cierras la puerta de la casa
El/ ella / usted cierra la ventana
Nosotros / nosotras cerramos la habitación con llave
Ellos / ellas / ustedes cierran el supermercado muy temprano
El gato cierra los ojos porque tiene sueño
Other verbs that work similar to “cerrar” are pensar, querer, empezar, sentarse, mentir, comenzar, empezar, entender and perder.

E > I
In this group we change the vowel e into i when we conjugate the verb. For instance, for the verb PEDIR (to ask), we need to change the vowels as follows, except for the first person plural (nosotros).
Yo pido un café en el restaurante
Tú pides disculpas
El/ ella / usted pide un favor
Nosotros / nosotras pedimos la cuenta
Ellos / ellas / ustedes piden dos platos a la carta
Ellos piden tres boletas en el museo
Alberto pide un jugo en la tienda
Other verbs that work similar to “pedir” are servir, seguir, decir, competir, corregir and repetir.
El mesero sirve el café
O > UE
In this group we change the vowel o into ue when we conjugate the verb. For instance, for the verb DORMIR (to sleep), we need to change the vowels as follows, except for the first person plural (nosotros).
Yo duermo 8 horas diarias
Tú siempre duermes la siesta
El/ ella / usted duerme en el trabajo
Nosotros / nosotras dormimos juntos
Ellos / ellas / ustedes duermen en camas separadas
Las niñas siempre duermen una hora por la tarde
Other verbs that work similar to “dormir” are volar, contar, costar, doler, encontrar and mostrar
Los aviones vuelan muy alto
El pájaro vuela sobre el mar
U > UE
In this group we change the vowel u into ue when we conjugate the verb. For instance, for the verb JUGAR (to play), we need to change the vowels as follows, except for the first person plural (nosotros).
Yo juego con mi perro todas las mañanas
Tú juegas tenis en el club
El/ ella / usted juegan como niños
Nosotros / nosotras jugamos dominó con la familia
Ellos / ellas / ustedes juegan fútbol en el estadio los domingos
El equipo de fútbol de Colombia juega muy bien
Ellos juegan bolos todos los fines de semana, por eso, son muy buenos
Well, those are some irregular verbs with some small changing in the root. Now you can make more sentences in present and practice them through reading, writing, listening or speaking. Next week, we have more irregular verbs with different characteristics!
